How to create chic looks with plaid
Whether it’s a bright-red and black buffalo-check shirt or a neutral tartan handbag, plaid in every shape, color and pattern is sticking around for months to come.
Although designers and retailers have embraced the look, some shoppers are wary that, on them, plaid could be more reminiscent of a parochial schoolgirl uniform or a lumberjack than a stylish trend.
Some plaids can be a fashion don’t, but we promise that, worn the right way, plaid can be cool, feminine and even sophisticated. Here are a few tips on how to pull it off.
The first rule is never to mix your plaids. Combining a plaid shirt with any other bold pattern complicates the look. This plaid double-weave Western tunic, $24.50 at Old Navy, pops when paired with such solid separates as a corduroy skirt, $26.50, also at Old Navy, and a BDG fisherman cardigan, $68 at Urban Outfitters. Top off your look with accessories that add a touch of feminine glamour, such as this Ariel braid-and-chains necklace, $69.50, and Samie animal-print ballet flats, $98, both at Banana Republic.
A little plaid goes a long way. Picking up outerwear, like this military jacket with hints of plaid, $44.50 at Old Navy is an easy way to add the playful pattern to your look. Just pair with T-shirt and jeans for a casual-cool look or layer over a dress, like this Rachel Roy printed dress, $99 at Macy’s, for an edgier look. For color, we added these Desert Geo post earrings, $14 at Urban Outfitters.
